Good lord.

I don't know which is more influential in conservative circles, the Wall Street Journal editorial page or the National Review, but I think most would agree both have to be on any short list.

So there's no way the McCain campaign wanted to wake up to news that the former publisher of National Review, Wick Allison, is now backing Obama... Why? Among other reasons:

Allison thinks the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and '03 -- which John McCain promises to expand -- were "a solution for which there was no real problem." He thinks they were downright egregious once the nation went to war.

...or that the WSJ editorial board is calling McCain's reaction to what's happening on Wall Street
both false and deeply unfair. It's also un-Presidential...Mr. McCain is sounding like a candidate searching for a political foil rather than a genuine solution.

So like I say, good lord.

That's the thing about this election. In the space of days, sometimes hours, I can go from relief that Obama is leading again to hoping McCain doesn't get punched too many times as he goes down.

Oh, I still want him to go down--and think he will. I just can't help hoping he doesn't hurt his dignity--however much of it he has left--in the process.
