Second note to self

Things to do:

1. Move to (or more likely near) Beverly Hills.

2. Get job as waiter at Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

Why?
to attend Variety’s 1st Annual Power of Women Luncheon, beauties such as Christina Aguilera, Anne HathawayPhotobucket

and Eva Longoria all made their way to the inaugural shindig.
Also on hand for the girl power fete were “90210” star AnnaLynne McCord,
Photobucket

as well as Olivia Wilde, Paula Abdul, Christina Applegate,Photobucket Sigourney Weaver, Maria Bello, January Jones, among others.

That many curves; at so many different angles, all in the same place (and at the same time)?

I'm feeling faint at the very thought.

The good news and the bad news

The good news is: Emmy Rossum will soon be single.

Emmy Rossum's husband, music executive Justin Siegel, has filed for divorce after a year-and-a-half marriage.

The bad news is...

Rossum recently has been romantically linked with Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz, 45.

For Chrissakes, Duritz, she's half your age, you sick fuck...

The line forms behind me

Once again, a really important poll

HuffPo asks: What woman has the best boobs in Hollywood? At present, the top 10 (get it?) include Salma Hayek, Heather Graham, Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry and Christina Hendricks.

I could support that.

(tee-hee, get it, again?)

But if it were up to me, one name I'd add might be Sarah Shahi...

And if there were a special category for most overlooked of all time, two words: Molly Ringwald...

Good luck.

Another pic (from the upcoming Saw VI)

I know, it probably won't mean anything to any of you. But if you follow these links, you'll see why (character names) Mark Hoffman meeting with Jill Tuck is pretty badass for those of us who love the Saw movies.

I f—in’ love you for that, Jenny Slate

'Saturday Night Live' goes really live: The f-bomb used by mistake?
by Ken Tucker

Did the f-word get dropped on Saturday Night Live tonight? It sure sounded that way. At about 12:42 Eastern Time, during a sketch called “Biker Chick Chat,” new cast member Jenny Slate seemed to say the word that got SNL cast member Charles Rocket in trouble in 1981.

Yeah, she sure did. What I don't get is how I heard it on the west coast...

The sketch included host Megan Fox and Kristen Wiig as “biker chicks” along with Slate. All of them were peppering their mock-tough-talk with the phrase “frickin’” but Slate appeared to say, “I f—in’ love you for that” instead.

Doh!

Here’s hoping no punishment is meted out to the new cast member for what was clearly just a slip of the tongue.

Seriously--especially since that sketch seemed to be some sort of test, or hazing of the newbie.

Repeating a euphemism for "fuckin," over and over is a known danger area--and Saturday Night Live should've known it better than most. The same thing happened to Paul Shaffer back in the '70s, according to the book Live From New York...

Who would've thought there was such a thing?

An image of Anne Hathaway emphasizing her boobs that I've never run?

I know I was surprised.

I don't know much about her politics, but I still think she looks much better since she had the baby

No, I don't know why either.

I have had 324,597 indirect and direct sexual partners

According to this thing, anyway:

Based on information entered into this calculator, people in your age group have had 3,389,169 indirect sexual partners

This figure represents the number of people you have indirectly slept with, going back six generations of partners.

When going back 3 generations, you have had 962 indirect and direct sexual partners.

Drew honey, you know I adore ya, but I think you have the wrong take on this

Drew Barrymore:
On exercise...

When it comes to transforming her body for a role, as she did for "Grey Gardens," the sunny actress is nothing but dedicated. But in everyday life, Barrymore aims for balance and body acceptance. "I don't have the time or discipline or interest in having a perfect-10 body. I work out, I eat right, but I'll always be a little bit of Jell-O on a pole."

Psst! Drew! That's how women are supposed to look! Why do you think Monroe is still the symbol of sex (or vice-versa)?

Some Like It Hot, screenplay by Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond:

Will you look at that! Look how she moves! It's like Jell-O on springs. Must have some sort of built-in motor or something. I tell you, it's a whole different sex!

Okay, I have to admit...

...I find these kind of funny and sexy. Most of them, anyway. A few do cross the line into not funny (to me) and/or sexist (definitely)--but which those are may largely be in the eye of the beholder.

What am I talking about?

It's times like this I really have to remind myself not to leap to conclusions

The FBI is investigating the hanging death of a U.S. Census worker near a Kentucky cemetery, and a law enforcement official told The Associated Press the word 'fed" was scrawled on the dead man's chest.

I'm not ashamed to admit that the first place my mind went upon seeing this breaking story was to wonder if the apparent murderer was a follower of the blubberings of Glen Beck; Rush Limbaugh, and the like. (And also, to wonder if it's time to move to England)

Maybe yours did too. After all, Beck's hosted Rep. Michele Bachman, who is either insane, a liar, or both (if I had the money to bet, I'd bet on insane) and says things like this:

Take this into consideration. If we look at American history, between 1942 and 1947, the data that was collected by the Census Bureau was handed over to the FBI and other organizations at the request of President Roosevelt, and that's how the Japanese were rounded up and put into the internment camps ... I'm not saying that that's what the Administration is planning to do, but I am saying that private personal information that was given to the Census Bureau in the 1940s was used against Americans to round them up, in a violation of their constitutional rights, and put the Japanese in internment camps."

Limbaugh and especially Beck both, meanwhile, like to put it about that the census equals ACORN. And, to them ACORN equals (quoting Joe Conason, who I like to listen to):
The fans of Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck regard ACORN as a criminal enterprise that fosters tax fraud, prostitution, child prostitution and even murder (thanks to a satirical "confession" by an employee filmed surreptitiously in the San Bernardino ACORN office). But ACORN chief organizer and CEO Bertha Lewis swiftly dismissed the employees caught on those videotapes and set about reforming the flawed processes that enabled those individuals to speak for the organization. No overt acts were committed by any of the people caught on those tapes -- and so far nobody has found that any of those theoretical "crimes" ever took place.

ACORN also equals President Obama's Watergate!

And President Obama, of course, equals The Manchurian Candidate.

This is the small-headed bullshit that people just like Beck, and Limbaugh, and Bachman, have been dropping into the ear canals of their all--too-eager listeners.

So perhaps you'll understand why my first reaction to reading about a man hung with a "Fed" label on him was to wonder:

If, perhaps, one of those individuals decided to let his or her actions speak louder than their words--and by their I mean the above-named wingnuts, plus Coulter, etc.

I'm not ashamed to admit, I wondered that. I'm not ashamed to admit it, because after thinking that...I thought again. As John A. of AmericaBlog says,

It's too early in the investigation to link this to the Republican demonization of the Census in particular (ACORN) and the US government in general (suggesting that the Obama administration was full of communists bent on destroying our country).

He's right, of course. It is too early...if understandable. And not shooting just the very moment we see the slightest flutter is what separates us from the wingnuts.

So I just wonder. I'm not asserting, but I do wonder.

I suspect this story will be coming up again in the future.

President Obama, the only thing you're triggering is my gag reflex

Mike Lux:

Media reports and insider buzz make it increasingly clear that key people at the White House have become obsessed with Olympia Snowe on health care, and are willing to do pretty much whatever she demands in order to get her on board. The price is looking more and more like this incredibly bad trigger proposal she has been pushing, a trigger that quite literally is written to automatically never trigger a public option. You see, Senator Snowe is writing language into an amendment that is literally a Catch-22. The legislative language says that a public option will be set up in a state in which health care is not affordable to 95% of the state's residents, but it defines affordability as after the new tax credits that are written into the bill to make health care affordable. Not only would this be an incredibly weak public option (doing it in one state will mean it can't get the market power to compete with the big insurers), but it would be a public option that is written by its definition to never be triggered. This is a trigger specifically, intentionally designed to kill the public option.

I sure hope he's right

One Dylan Loewe, writing in the HufPo, on why...

...concluding today that Democrats will lack enthusiasm in 2010 is a major mistake. Barack Obama has not yet begun to fire up his base for the midterms. But when he stands up and gives one of his barn-burner speeches, when he calls on those who brought change to the Washington to make sure it stays that way, when he uses the infrastructure of his 2008 race to support and recruit, I have little doubt that Democrats will answer the call. It has been in the past, it will continue to be in the future, a terrible mistake to underestimate Barack Obama's ability to mobilize his base.

The crazies are going to get louder and louder. From a policy perspective, that's a challenge. From a politics perspective, it isn't. Never forget that American politics always presents a binary choice. The louder and more pervasive that fringe gets, the more they push Congressional Republicans to mimic them on the floor of the house, the more indistinguishable they become from the party itself. Frustrations with Democrats in Congress have been there in the past. In 2008, Nancy Pelosi's approval ratings were about as low as President Bush's, and Congress as a whole wasn't much better. Still, the Democrats won a Congressional landslide that November. The question is, with the fringe growing to become the only voice of the GOP, will those who are frustrated with Democrats really see the Republican party as a worthy alternative? My gut says no.

I don't know who Cheryl Tweedy is, but I know what I like

And after all, I am the '80s man.

It's Banned Books Week.

Typically, around this time, I take a look at a few selections from a list of the banned, and celebrate same.

An example of some well-known books that have been banned are “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “A Catcher in the Rye,” “Lord of the Flies,” the “Twilight” series, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “James and the Giant Peach,” the “Harry Potter” series, “Bridge to Terabithia,” “Goosebumps” series, and even “Where’s Waldo."
However, I have just learned that Dan "the idiot who gave us 'Sir Leigh Teabing" Brown's new book has already topped two million in sales, and I find myself feeling a lot kinder towards the concept of book-banning than I have hitherto.

...I'm kidding, of course.

Even if I weren't, this item would change my mind back again:

Several years ago challenges to "Harry Potter" books, based on complaints about witchcraft and sorcery, were more common.

More recently, the association has received challenges to books with gay-positive themes, such as the picture book "And Tango Makes Three."

I just had to live dangerously, didn't I?

Y'know...I hate to be distracted by an issue of style over substance...but...

Ok, there's a quote that started going around the news sites and such yesterday:

Vice President Joe Biden said today that if Democrats were to lose 35 House seats they currently hold in traditionally Republican districts, it would mean doomsday for President Obama’s agenda.

Biden said Republicans are pinning their political strategy on flipping these seats.

“If they take them back, this the end of the road for what Barack and I are trying to do,” the vice president said at a fundraiser for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) today in Greenville, Delaware.

I hope Biden is being pessimistic. But here's what hit me: Since when does does a Vice President refer to the President by his first name, in public? Isn't it usually "President Obama," or "The President?"

Like I say. Not even a big deal. But it hit me.

Not all that complex, really

Leaving aside for the moment the (true, but irrelevant) fact that Rachel Maddow is as cute as a button...

...this is insane.

In his comments, [Young America’s Foundation spokesman Jason] Mattera evoked the battle of David against Goliath as a metaphor for conservative college students who are ‘persecuted’ by the big bad liberals who control academia.” While discussing that theme, Mattera took the opportunity to argue for the supremacy of conservatism by saying, “our women are hot“

During the panel, Mattera took the David and Goliath metaphor another perverse step: If conservatives (David) smite liberals (Goliath), they will be rewarded with the hot conservative women, just like King Saul promised his daughter to the warrior who slew the evil giant.

And then he took an impossible-to-defend shot at Rachel Maddow. But like I said up top there, even leaving that aside...

Oh Lawsey, Lawsey, Lawsey, Lawsey, Lawsey...

Ok. Any of you remember The Abstinence Clearinghouse? I've written about them once or twice before. They're the group that sponsors the twisted and sickening "Purity Balls" in which little girls not even old enough to know what "sexually pure" means pledge to remain so...to their fathers.

They also have weird ways of trying to promote their anti-sex agenda. The first I heard of them was when they had the bright idea of merchandising cherry-flavored (I am not kidding) lollypops with "just say no to sex" messages on the stem.

And now, this.

By which I presume he means winning the Nobel Peace Prize; building houses for the poor...

Bush on Jimmy Carter: "If I'm ever eighty-two years old and acting like that have someone put me away."

Dear Mr. Bush: If you start acting like Jimmy Carter by the time you're 82 (or anytime before, really) we'll all have to be put away.

Okay...

Fair warning: This post contains homosexual pornography.

At least according to these boys...

At the Family Research Council’s Values Voters Summit today, FRC Senior Fellow Pat Fagan, Heritage Foundation scholar Matthew Spalding and Michael Schwartz, the chief of staff for Sen. Tom Coburn, held a discussion on “The New Masculinity.”

SCHWARTZ: But it is my observation that boys at that age [pre-teen] have less tolerance for homosexuality than just about any other class of people. They speak badly about homosexuality. And that’s because they don’t want to be that way. They don’t want to fall into it. And that’s a good instinct.

It's my observation--and also, my memory--that boys at that age don't know much about much of anything, certainly not about sexuality (their own or others).

Schwartz then recalled “a very good friend” of his “who was in the homosexual lifestyle for a long time,” saying that he “had good conversations about, about the malady that he suffered.”

I know...good already, right? Wait till you read this next part.

SCHWARTZ: ...He said, “all pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards. Now think about that."

Wow!

To think that by running all those images of sexy women, I've really been supporting the gay men's cause.

I have just one question. Say, Schwartz...

President Obama, speaking on one of the news outlets on which he did appear this morning:
The 24-hour news networks and news blogs focus so much on the most extreme elements of political debate that they are effectively fueling anger, President Barack Obama said Sunday.

In one of his many interviews Sunday morning, Obama told CBS News’ Bob Schieffer that “part of what’s different today is that the twenty-four-hour news cycle and cable television and blogs and all this, they focus on the most extreme elements on both sides.

“They can’t get enough of conflict, it’s catnip to the media right now,” Obama continued. “And so the easiest way to get 15 minutes of fame is to be rude to somebody. In that environment I think it makes it more difficult for us to solve the problems that the American people sent us here to solve.”

Her parents are obviously fine with it. But her younger half-brothers, Jack, 20, and Miles, 17 (sons of Ms. Sarandon’s current partner, Tim Robbins), are not so thrilled.

“My brothers want to kill me,” Ms. Amurri said. “They’re mad that their friends will be able to see me topless. But I’m not nude in every single scene, so I told them I would give them a list of the ones they can watch comfortably.”

Playing the links

Corey Klemow sent me a link to an unpublished speech written by Larry Gelbart. I don't know if he saw this, but at the bottom of the page there's also a link to what's billed as Gelbart's Last In-Depth Interview. It's actually excerpted from a book about writers of humor that I've had requested from the library almost two months.

As usual, excerpts follow; following the links is more than recommended.

Almost exclusively, writers are the only ones among us who are given the chance to live their lives all over again.

the central theme for Tootsie came from me. And the central theme was that Dustin's character, Michael Dorsey, would become a better man for having been a woman.
Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman): "I was a better man with you as a woman than I ever was with a woman as a man."

Your brain will never stop for the day, even if you have stopped working, and there's a very good chance you'll come up with something better.

More dumb comments by Megan Fox

At least, I'm sure that's how they'll be reported, even though they make perfect sense to me.

After developing a reputation for not only her sex appeal, but making provocative and occasionally outrageous statements in the press, Megan Fox wants you to know something about her: "I'm kidding!"

"Ninety-eight percent of the things that come out of my mouth are intended to be harmless or even charming," Fox tells PEOPLE at a fan event and autograph signing for her new film Jennifer's Body at Hollywood's Hot Topic store. "They're not ever intended to be offensive or controversial."

Fox also insists she's not just trying to put on a saucy persona in the public eye for her own amusement. "It's just to get through it, I think, because you want to present and you want to be available to your fans, but you also don't want to give too much of yourself away, because people take advantage of that," she says. "It's learning the balance between giving the information that needs to be given, but then also protecting your privacy and your personal life, the things that you hold dear."

There's more, including her talking about a girl's discovery of her woman's sexuality.

Boy, too bad she's so dumb, huh? I mean, if she were not dumb, and as hot as she is, she might actually be a threat and people might actually be scared of her.

Heck, that might even explain why so many magazines and bloggers seem so attached to the idea that she is dumb and/or shallow.

For instance, if you look at the headline of and then read the story to which I've linked, you'll see that they took Fox's general comment about the sexual power of women and made it specific to her--thus making her sound like a stuck-up bitch.

Which, of course, she is. I know. People Magazine told me so.

Too bad.

That's my Senator.

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) said yesterday that she wants changes made to the health care bill unveiled by Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT). “I wouldn’t vote for a bill that doesn’t have Medicare reform and the public option,” Cantwell said. “What would I tell the people in Washington state?”

Way to go.

Right as usual, King Limbaugh

If I think too long about how much money Rush has vs. how much I have...I'll simply have no choice but to drown myself.

In a remark extraordinary even by the standards of conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh, the right-wing radio heavyweight declared on his program Wednesday that the United States needed to return to racially segregated buses.

2009, it is, BTW, for those of you who haven't looked at a calendar lately. And he's calling for segregated buses. But wait, there's more.

He also said:

“If homosexuality being inborn is what makes it acceptable, why does racism being inborn not make racism acceptable?” the talk show host asked. “I’m sorry — I mean, this is the way my mind works. But apparently now we don’t choose racism, we just are racists. We are born that way. We don’t choose it. So shouldn’t it be acceptable, excuse — this is according to the way the left thinks about things.”

Racism...homosexuality. Exactly the same thing. Even though one is about whom you love, and the other is about what kind of person you hate. And never mind that racism is not inborn. As the song from South Pacific said:

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught...

I find myself wondering, just who taught Rush Limbaugh...

Jesus Christ.

This is who we (and by "we" I mean Dick Cheney) sent to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people.

In 2005, Jamie Lee Jones was gang-raped by her co-workers while she was working for Halliburton/KBR in Baghdad. In an apparent attempt to cover up the incident, the company then put her in a shipping container for at least 24 hours without food, water, or a bed, and “warned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, she’d be out of a job.” Even more insultingly, the DOJ resisted bringing any criminal charges in the matter. KBR argued that Jones’ employment contract warranted her claims being heard in private arbitration — without jury, judge, public record, or transcript of the proceedings. After 15 months in arbitration, Jones and her lawyers went to court to fight the KBR claims. Yesterday, a court ruled in favor of Jones.” Mother Jones reports:

Jones argued that the alleged gang rape was not related to her employment and thus, wasn’t covered by the arbitration agreement.

I dunno if I can get past the part where she had to argue that in the first place.

A question.

What happens when The '80s Man and Saw lover sees the new Saw VI poster?

The answer: He starts to hear "Take My Breath Away" begin to play...

(BTW, if any of you were major fans, you'd know that "He helped me" is a quote from Shawnee Smith's character, in the first movie.)

Wait a minute.

There's a silly story going around today about how, when Joe Wilson's wife spoke to him after President Obama's speech last week, she asked him who the nut was.

You know, the one who had burst out "You lie!" during the speech. Before learning, of course, that it was Wilson himself. A heh heh heh heh.

But I wasn't going to say anything about said silly story because I still think staying on the shout story more than a cycle is making my side look stupid.

However, read this entry at Think Progress about it, and see if what jumps out at me is the same as jumps out at you.

Mrs. Wilson, who met her husband at teenage Republican camp, said that Joe “is very passionate” and that he doesn’t deserve the treatment he’s been getting from Congress.”

Well, actually, he does, it's just that this Congress, having let Bush and Cheney walk away clean, has no moral standing whatsoever from which to give it to him.

But of course, that's not what jumped out at me either. This was:

There's such a thing as teenage Republican camp?

Family Values.

With the White House zeroing in on the insurance-industry practice of discriminating against clients based on pre-existing conditions, administration allies are calling attention to how broadly insurers interpret the term to maximize profits.

It turns out that in eight states, plus the District of Columbia, getting beaten up by your spouse is a pre-existing condition.

In 2006, Democrats tried to end the practice. An amendment introduced by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), now a member of leadership, split the Health Education Labor & Pensions Committee 10-10. The tie meant that the measure failed.

All ten no votes were Republicans, including Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming), a member of the "Gang of Six" on the Finance Committee who are hashing out a bipartisan bill.

I've been waiting for this one

Alan Alda says farewell to his friend Larry Gelbart. Excerpts follow, but for god's sake read the whole thing:

Larry Gelbart could take an event where sentimentality was allowed, even expected, and turn it on its ear. My friend Allan Katz, who also wrote for "MASH," was with him once at a friend's funeral. When Larry realized he had to leave early, he leaned over to Allan and said simply, "I'm sorry to grieve and run."

And the more I watched him, the more convinced I became that the only effort he put into it was in not saying most of the funny things that occurred to him. He would only let one get his lips moving if it was really worth hearing. And he would often enjoy it as much as you did, as if he had never heard it before. Because he hadn't.

But he's gone now. The bastard seems to have won this round. We have the words and images our friend left behind, but we don't have that easy smile, full of generosity, or the sound of that silky voice and lovingly articulated words. They really were pearls that came out of his mouth, and he never gave the impression he was laying them before swine. All of us who worked with him were awed by him, and we revered him, but we always, always were comfortable in his presence because above all we loved him. And we could see that he loved us back.

Oh, my god.

Y'know...many of us on the left have been wondering with curious incredulity just when a prominent member of the Republican party would speak up with a realistic look at Sarah Palin. Now, we learn (from a new book) that in the days following her nomination:

"This woman is being put into a position she is not even remotely prepared for," he said. "She hasn't spent one day on the national level. Neither has her family. Let's wait and see how she looks five days out."

Who made this assesment with which no sane person could possibly disagree (and which days since have done nothing but confirm)?

Former President. George. W. Bush.

It breaks my heart to say this...

...because I generally think she's adorable, but...Drew Barrymore has reached "What happened?" status.

Oh, that explains it.

Megan Fox, on the left; Diane Kruger, on the right, and in the middle, Emma Roberts...because she fills them both with naked fear.

I'd been wondering why I suddenly find myself sticking up for Megan Fox so often, even though between you and me I don't actually think she's the sexiest woman of all time.

(Jennifer Connelly--speaking of Jennifer's Body--for example, was much hotter as well as a better actress a few years ago, and Krista Allen was...well, she was at least as hot a few years ago). Although Fox does have it all over Sandra Bullock (sorry, Sandra). But I digress.

It seems that Ms. Fox...

"...was raised Catholic. [And] went to Catholic school for 12 years."

All together now:

I should've found room for The Marx Brothers, especially Groucho, in last months list of things in which I find delight

Everybody loves a clown...

This excerpt from Animal Crackers always makes me smile.

"where are Soda, and Super-dope, anyhow?" "Super-what?" "All brawn, no brains."

Driving to the library about an hour ago, I heard the news that Patrick Swayze had died.

For me I think he'll always be Darrel Curtis in The Outsiders, a movie with a place in my heart (as I wrote about here). Maybe he wasn't the greatest actor who ever lived but, in that movie, boy was he ever the big brother every only child wanted...or maybe it was just me.

(Even when he hits Ponyboy).

The movie Ghost is one of those rare instances where my taste and America's line up, which these days only seems to happen when a Harry Potter or Pixar movie comes out. I thought it was excellent.

Point Break was dumb, but it was fun dumb....which is more than I can say for all his films.

As for Dirty Dancing...if you can't say something nice...

PS: Oh, and I saw at least part of Roadhouse, but all I remember is Kelly Lynch's ass.

Okay, that's just snotty

On my Blogger "Dashboard" right now, there is a little announcement informing me:
New! Email Notifications Get feature announcements and tips to get the most out of your blog. Enable now!
Well. How nice.

And normally, I'd be more than interested in tips to get the most out of my blog(s).

If I hadn't been waiting a week for Blogger to unlock one of those said blogs, a process which is supposed to take only a couple of business days.

Once you've requested a review, a Blogger employee will review your blog within two business days and take action as necessary.

We received your unlock request on September 8, 2009.

That's math so simple even I can do it...

That's what they say

Sex and relationship monthly astrology: Virgo

How to attract a Virgo: Usually fit and trim, a Virgo's body is it's temple.

How true. That's why I'm sitting here with the physique of a Navy man.

Sex with Virgo: Extremely devoted, but independent and never-clingy, a Virgo is a well-balanced mate.

It sounds like we're quite a good "buy," sexually speaking.

A fun fantasy for the Virgo would be the nurse/patient scenario.

...Uh-oh, they're on to me.
