Veronica Mars & Jesus

(Actually Kristen Bell & Victor Garber, attending an Alzheimer’s Association event)

This reminds me of an ex-girlfriend who once said I was kind of a cross between the Lorax and Obi-Wan Kenobi...only hotter. Her thoughts, not mine...

But you can't blame me for remembering it.

Yeeeeeee-haaaaaaaaa'!!!!

From Pop Candy in USA Today:

Friday Night Lights fans are rejoicing over a report posted by Nikki Finke saying the critically acclaimed series has been rescued. She says NBC has made a deal with DirecTV, which will share some of the costs and also air the show.

Fans have been working hard to bring back the series, organizing online campaigns and "mini-football" mailings to network execs.

And from TV Guide's Michael Ausiello:
...the buzz is that an agreement has been reached and is essentially just awaiting a signature. To which I say, Ohymygodthankyoujesus!

Query

Ok. Here's a news item from the AP, via Earthlink news. It's about a man who tried to stop a couple from stealing a tip jar from Starbucks, and was run over by them in a car for his troubles, dying two days later.

There's heroism and tragedy in this--the heroism self-evident, the tragedy...

It's believed there was about $5 in the tip jar.

But here's what I don't get. The headline:
Man Fatally Hurt Trying to Stop Thieves

How can you be "Fatally Hurt?" Shouldn't it be something like:

"Man Dies Of Injuries Inflicted Trying To Stop Thieves"

Just a thought, an idle observation if you will...

Mystery first lady theatre 3000

In remarks Wednesday to U.S. publishing executives, first lady Laura Bush called books her "greatest love affair"

The joke writes itself.

and warned that a "nation that does not read for itself cannot think for itself."

"...and my husband has made a wonderful living because of that."

New definitions...for the word...*gall*

As most of you reading this know, I have certain "issues" with the state of Tennessee, god's gift to the collector of human oddity. For those of you who don't know, these stem almost wholly from my experiences with the Tennessee Stage Company.

This group produced my play The Girl in the Boat in 2003, and thanks to some diva actors and an amateur director, screwed it up all to hell. In these things, I take as my role model Sweeney Todd: He never forgets and he never forgives.

The Tennessee Stage Company is currently using a picture of the cast of that play, and that play alone, on their submissions page. Should any new playwrights be thinking of submitting to them, and tumble across this blog looking for more information, chew this over, before you do:

I can only tell you about what happened to me. And I found that their actors are selfish and spoiled, and the promises of their directors mean nothing.

By my count, I'm only slightly whiter than PJ, my trophy black friend.

Playing off this entry in her blog...

#01 Coffee - Hate it. I count it as a scarring experience the first time I, as a child, tried coffee ice cream, which has got to be some kind of a socialist plot.

#11 Asian Girls - I used to think I wasn't "into" Asian girls the way some guys are, I mean not the way I'm "into" redheads, Goth chicks and intellectual girls. But then I realized what I'm not "into" is the porcelain geisha cliché.

You give me a woman with some Filipina or Chinese blood in her body who is vigorously hot...well, I get a kick out of those dames. Like the aforementioned Ms. Cates, or my old friend Kahni Clements

or Michelle Yeoh,

or Jennifer Lee Wiggins.

#17 Hating their Parents - I've got a right.

#29 80s Night-Don't think I've ever actually been to one, but I approve heartily in principle. Besides, when you're with me, every night is 80s Night...

#35 The Daily Show/Colbert Report-Damn straight. Best satire on the air and the only TV "news" shows I watch regularly.

#38 Arrested Development-Call out the guard, I never thought this series deserved much better ratings than it got. Just seemed way too "inside."

#39 Netflix-Haven't warmed to Netflix either, though maybe I would if I didn't live five minutes away from the Coolest Video Store in America (so dubbed by Premiere magazine).

#43 Plays - Feh. Wouldn't touch the stuff.

#50 Irony-Worst cushion there is...and so '90s, don'tcha know.

#51 Living by the Water-Hey, I would, if I could, but I can't, so I don't.

#52 Sarah Silverman--Well, I've talked about this more than once. I tend to be a little ambivalent about Sarah Silverman, and I generally think she's sexier than she is funny (though she's both)

#58 Japan - Any country where Ryuichi Sakamoto can have #1 hits is ok by me.

#68 Michel Gondry-It's a fair cop; I do like Michel Gondry--the kind of director who gives "visionary" a good name.

#77 Musical Comedy--Love it. Kern, Berlin, Porter, Hammerstein, the Gershwin kids, Gwen Verdon, Bob Fosse...

George Bush: Ahead of the curve(ball), as usual

US President George W. Bush on Wednesday anointed one-time bitter rival John McCain as his preferred successor and heir to the vastly unpopular Iraq war and deepening economic fears.

It was not clear how Bush, whose approval ratings lie at near record-lows with 10 months left in his term, would help the man he defeated for the Republican party's nomination in 2000 as the November 2008 elections draw nigh.

The president was expected to try to rally skeptical Republicans behind McCain, raise some of the millions of dollars that are the lifeblood of US campaigns, and work to help the party recapture the US Congress, aides said.

You get that? The day after McCain clinches the nomination of his party...the titular leader of his party endorses him. Let the hosannas ring across the land.

(OK, so after a few hours sleep, I found something to say about politics after all.)

Is it just me, or does that look like Phoebe Cates to anyone else?

"Seldom make pass," my ass

Where are you now, Felice Schachter?

If this was my couch, I'd want to kill myself too

(Note: This joke only works because none of you reading this has actually seen my couch.)

Tell me about it

The kind people / Have a wonderful dream

This is almost four years old, but I just found it. It was created by Joe at American Leftist, who calls it "Perp Walk." Click to see full size.

Looking at this, though, I can't help but think about something: The fact that it remains, today, as much a pipe dream as ever, means we've known the Bush administration is made up of evil criminals for four years. And we haven't done jack about it.

And when someone brings it up to the republicans, they say "That's yesterday." And when someone brings it up to the Democrats, they just smile, wink and touch their nose. Some sort of a deal has been done somewhere to allow George W. Bush to stay president, and receive honors he should scurl away from like cockroaches in light.

You know, in my time, I've written a few things putting the lash (metaphorically) to Baby Boomers. And I'm not one to kiss up to "The Greatest Generation," either. But I must say, between them, they knew what to do when their president was revealed to be a loathesome crook, and they did it.

We know. But we haven't got the--you should pardon the expression--balls.

I have a feeling this is going to be the last more political post in this blog for a few days. I'm sick of it.

Apparently I haven't been giving Serena Williams the respect she deserves

Winona Ryder: What happened?

Ok, so using an image from A Scanner Darkly is cheating...but still, how did she get from there...to here:

It's photos like this that make me wish I'd thought Pushing Daisies was a better show.

I know nothing about this actress, but damn, she's cute

Her name is Lindy Booth...

Should they be back? Some.

I was thinking of writing a little post about the season/probably series finale of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, but as it turns out Whitney Pastorek's recap serves that purpose to a lovely degree.

My favorite color keeps Summer Glau warm so she can blossom.

I agree with most everything Pastorek says, but I'd add praise for Glau as the bot-chick, and it's not just because she's such pretty good eye-candy.

But, let's not kid ourselves...

Also increasingly, Thomas Dekker has been impressing me as John Connor. I know...me and my unusual "female"-male relationships again, but it is the part of the show I like best. What do you want me to do? Lie?

Just where the show loses power is hinted at in its very--and very unwieldy--title.

Sarah Connor is the weak link. I'm not sure if this is Lena Headey's fault (although I'd like to think not, since I've liked her in other things).

It could be just because Linda Hamilton's was such a "WOW" of a performance that anyone else would be hard-pressed to do as well.

If the show gets a second season, which seems unlikely but not impossible, I hope they recast, rewrite, or eliminate the part. And if it doesn't get a 2nd...I'm okay with that too. This series is kind of like the Hillary Clinton of television for me.

I'd be perfectly happy to see it renewed...but my heart is really with shows like Dirt.

...Did I just (unintentionally) parallel Barack Obama with a series called Dirt?

'What does your Birthdate mean?' at QuizGalaxy.com

"Why can't I be...just what I am? And speak my love..."

So you ask yourself...how could Grease 2 have been a better movie? And the answer comes...if Emmy Rossum had been in the cast. We'll just leave out that she hadn't even been born yet when the film was released...and how little I wanted to know that.

Then you ask yourself: How could The Phantom of the Opera have had a better soundtrack? Once again, the answer comes: If Louis St. Louis had written the music instead of Andrew Lloyd Webber (or at least the lyrics).

And you think: If only there were some way in which we could see what that might be like...

AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE GREAT & POWERFUL OZ:

I've thought it over, and as a title, DiD is taking a little vacation to Bermuda. 'Till I change my mind, the title is "a dragon dancing with the Buddha."

I don't normally like to describe anyone as "a class act."

But I can't think of anything better than that for Howard Dean, after reading this statement. Seriously:
Dean: “…Look, John McCain is a flawed candidate. Here’s a guy who is a typical situational ethicist, he runs on his integrity, but he doesn’t seem to have any. We’re familiar with the fact that he got on the ballot in Ohio with what now turns out to be false pretenses. He qualified because he was taking public financing, and now he says he’s not going to. He doesn’t have the permission of the FEC to do that, and just this week he refused to denounce and reject John Hagee, a militant, anti-Catholic right wing pastor and John McCain has a history of doing what it takes regardless of what the ethics of this are. I think he’s going to be a flawed candidate, I don’t think people want four more years of what is essentially four more years of George Bush.”

Sock it towards them, Howard baby...

Alyssa Milano is trying too hard to turn my head

Anne Hathaway...let's just face it, she kicks ass

Sigh...

Anne Hathaway (The Devil Wears Prada and Get Smart) will be one of several local "heroes" honored at the 15th annual Los Angeles Human Rights Campaign Gala Dinner on March 15 at the Hyatt Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

The gala is one of the largest gay fundraising events in Southern California, with more than 1,000 guests attending in past years, including national GLBT leaders in entertainment, community service, business and politics.

Never before have I had more regret at having moved to Seattle. Why?

Anne Hathaway was at Wondercon. Anne Hathaway, my "reason enough to believe in God" was at a convention that I've attended more than once, and if I'd known she was attending, certainly would have.

If I still lived in the Bay Area. Sigh...

Here she is trying to give my favorite color a heart attack.

And all I have to say about this last one is...eep!

The last word on the Oscars

I don't know if anyone noticed (or cared), but I didn't do a post this year, as I have previously, giving my thoughts on the Oscars.

I didn't even run that many pictures of the women I thought were best-dressed. By which I of course mean the ones who made me want to see them un-dressed. The picture of Anne Hathaway in the rose-gown was from that event, but that was all.

But anyway, I didn't record my thoughts on it because I don't really have many. Though I was pleased to see the Peter & the Wolf featurette to which I linked in January take the award for best animated short.

I bring all this up by way of leading into a link to Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy, wherein he gives his thoughts on the event, and recommending it. Especially this part:

I feel a keen sense of frustration when both reporters and ordinary folks ask me about the disparity between the films being honored and the past year’s box-office hits. Do they seriously think the Academy should present an Oscar to moneymakers like Alvin and the Chipmunks? Would that make everybody feel better?

Congratulations, Eva Mendes.

...you found a dress so hideous I actually don't want to look at your breasts.

Well done.
