Next question?

One or two times people have given me shit about how lightweight the '80s pop stars were compared to the grungy '90s. I looked them right in the eye and said

"'80s: Live Aid. '90s: McWoodstocks '94 and '99."

At Live Aid, stage time was at such a premium that even a singer as firmly placed in the pantheon as Elvis Costello (my reservations aside) was only allotted one song. This is what he sang, introducing it as "An old Northern folk song."

I'm just curious, but what sort of "reservations" do you have about Elvis Costello?

Costello is kind of like Neil Diamond to me, in that with a few exceptions, I like his songs more when others sing them.

There's a certain kind of singer-songwriter that I often think would have been better off sticking to the latter half of that equation.

(But he shouldn't feel too bad...that's also how I feel about Dylan)

I love Costello's song "Veronica," and I'd love to hear someone else do it, 'cause sometimes his voice grates on my nerves.

Oh, and I HATE Bob Dylan's voice!
